Mt. Kanchanjunga Expedition

Kanchenjunga (8,586m) is the third largest mountains in the world. It is situated on the northern border of Nepal and Sikkim and it is 46 miles northwest of Darjeeling. Kanchenjunga is also called kanchenzonga which means the “five treasures of snow”as this peak consists with the five major peaks. They are Kanchenjunga (8586m), Yalungkang (8505m), Kanchenjunga west (8420m) and the Twin peaks (both 8476m). These five peaks represent the five repositories of God. They are gold, silver, gems, grain and holy books. Among the five, three peaks are on the border of North Sikkim, district of India and Taplejung, District of Nepal while other two peaks are completely in Taplejung, District of Nepal. The first elevation to the Kanchenjunga summit was on May 25, 1955 by British Expedition. Kanchenjunga is considered as the highest mountain in the world until 1852. However, in 1849 the calculations made by the British Great Trogonometric survey came to the conclusion that Mt.Everest was the highest and Kanchenjunga was the third-highest mountain in the World.
